Highly regarded British boxing prospect Odel Kamara is set to begin his professional career with Matchroom Boxing, with Eddie Hearn suggesting that the Liverpool fighter could make his debut in October.
The 22-year-old is expected to compete at junior middleweight and will be trained by respected coach Tony Sims. Kamara arrives in the professional ranks with an impressive amateur background, highlighted by his bronze-medal finish for England at the World Championships in Liverpool at 70kg.
After deciding to turn professional, Kamara was determined to work with a team capable of helping him reach the highest level of the sport.
“After my decision to turn professional, my attention was firmly on who I thought was best to guide me to the very top of the sport.”
That search led him to Matchroom Boxing. Following meetings with Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith, Kamara quickly became convinced that the promotion was the right fit for his ambitions.
“I met with Eddie Hearn and Frank Smith and I knew straight away that Matchroom Boxing was the place for me.”
Eddie Hearn backs Kamara for stardom
Hearn has already made it clear that he sees significant potential in his latest signing. The Matchroom promoter believes Kamara has the skills and personality required to become one of the leading names in British boxing.
“Kamara is one of the future faces of British boxing. This kid has got it all: he has got the looks, the personality, the power, and, above all, he can really fight.”
Hearn also revealed that there was considerable competition to sign the young prospect before Kamara ultimately chose Matchroom. He expects the fighter to become a major attraction in Liverpool and eventually establish himself on the international stage.
“I think Kamara will be in the conversation over time as one of the most exciting stars we’ve ever produced in this country.”
For Kamara, the long-term ambitions extend far beyond simply making a successful professional debut. The Liverpool native has been boxing since the age of three and has previously spoken about his desire to win a world championship at Anfield, the iconic home of Liverpool Football Club.
With Matchroom behind him, Tony Sims in his corner and an October debut reportedly being lined up, Kamara now has the opportunity to begin turning those ambitions into reality.
The next chapter of his career is expected to start later this year, with British boxing fans watching closely to see whether the highly touted Liverpool prospect can live up to the considerable expectations surrounding him.
